Week of April 15th

Hello, I am sending this post out a little early because I am going to be gone on Monday. Please remember to email the office with any transportation changes. You can always include me, but if I happen to be gone there is no guarantee anyone will see it. If you email me over the weekend or on Monday, I will do my best to get back to you by Tuesday. Mrs. Pratt will be my substitute and the kids will keep going as normal. :)

ELA:

We are continuing our book Tales of a 4th Grade Nothing. We will be writing newspaper articles, studying new words, and working on our reading comprehension. We will also be finishing up our opinion writing on Monday. We will begin our narrative writing on Tuesday. I am so proud of my students and the hard work they are putting into class! This is a quiz week so we will have a Morning Warm Up quiz on Thursday.

Math:

This week we finish up our work on customary and metric measurements. We will begin working on geometry by the end of the week. I am so proud of their hard work and dedication to getting through our content before ISATs. They are working hard! I would also like to recognize those students who are finishing up assignments at home when they haven't been completed at school. Those kids are amazing and I am so proud of them! This week we do have a Math 4 Today quiz on Thursday.

Science:

Your student got what they need to start on Step 3: Experimenting last week. If your student still does not have a question approved by me, please make every effort to get that done over the weekend as they are running out of time.

Students will be presenting these in class starting Monday, May 13th. They will then be displayed in the AUX gym on Thursday, May 16th from 5:30-7:00 during our Science Fair. I am so excited to see what they come up with!

RAD Performance:

Our students have been working so hard on our RAD performance here at school. That will be on Thursday, April 18th at 7:00pm. Please plan to be here! You won't want to miss it!

ISATs:

We will be taking our ISATs on Monday, April 29th and Thursday, May 2nd. Please make every effort to have your student in class every day until then. Attendance is always important, but it is even more so as we prepare for these tests. I spend class time talking about how to navigate the test, becoming familiar with the format, and doing practice questions to help alleviate some of the anxiety that can happen with the test.

ISAT Party:

Our class has been talking about the ISAT party that we will be having after we complete our ISATs. Students can earn an invitation to the party one of two ways. The first way is their score, this means that they meet their goal on the ISAT by scoring a 3 or 4 or by improving one level from the practice ISAT they took in the fall. The second way they can earn an invitation is by working hard from now until ISATs showing that they are trying to do their very best. I offer this second option because I know test anxiety is a real thing and my goal is to take that off the plate for my students. I want them to feel confident in their knowledge and be able to show what they know. :) This party will be a lot of fun! I usually have pizza and root beer floats. If you would like to help out and send in supplies, let me know and I will let you know what we need. :)

Week of April 8th

Hello everyone! I hope you had a great weekend and start to your week. I apologize for getting this out late. I had a family emergency over the weekend and needed to be away yesterday. I am so proud of these kids and the progress they are making!

ELA:

This week in ELA we are starting a new novel called Tales of a 4th Grade Nothing. This is a really fun story and we always laugh so much when we read it! We are continuing to use these to work on comprehension among so many other things.

For writing we will be finishing up our opinion writings this week! We are cruising right along and I am so proud of the thoughtful, respectful, and insightful conversations your students have been having.

Our very last spelling test is on Thursday! We do not have a Morning Warm Up quiz this week though.

Math:

We are really making great progress in math. We finished up Topic 11 last week and are starting Topic 13 this week. This is all about units of measurement, both customary and metric. There is no Math 4 Today quiz this week.

Science Project:

Step 2 was due yesterday. That step was researching the topic of your student's question. If your student has not turned in their question and had it approved by me, I did not accept step 2 for a grade. I have to approve the question first to make sure that it is one that an entire project can be built around.

Step 3 went home yesterday, but we  reviewed it as a class today since I wasn't here yesterday. This is the part where your student gets to experiment. We discusses variables and how to identify what they are in a project. I encouraged my students to send me an email if they are home working on this and struggling to identify the different types of variables. The due date for Step 3 is Monday, April 29th. However, if your student is still in the middle of their experiment on that day, please send me an email and let me know. I planned this project with extra time so that if a project is taking longer than anticipated, we are still ok to get it all done before the Science Fair

Please help your student remember to take pictures and document each part of the experiment. This will come in handy when they start to put together their presentation. They need to also keep each step as that will become part of their presentation as well.

Week of April 1st

I hope you all had a lovely spring break! I was so excited to get back to class with my students. We have just a few weeks left before we start ISAT testing and I am so excited about the progress they are making!

ELA:

This week we will be finishing up The One and Only Ivan. We are also working on our opinion writing where students will be discussing how they feel about animals being in zoos or circuses. I enjoy doing this when we read The One and Only Ivan as students really have some amazing thoughts and insights as we read.

This week we DO have a Morning Warm Up quiz along with our spelling test. We will take our pretest on List Z on Thursday and this is our last list for the year! After that students will be done with spelling tests!

March Reading Calendars were due on Monday, April 1st. Feel free to send me an email letting me know how many minutes your student read if they forgot to turn it in or it was lost.

Math:

We finished up Topic 12 on Monday and are starting Topic 11 today. This is a pretty short topic that deals with interpreting data on line plots. We will be finishing it up on Thursday. To make sure I at least introduce everything before ISATs, we will be cruising through a few extra lessons for the next couple of weeks.

Science Fair:

Your student brought home the first step of the Science Fair project yesterday which was coming up with a question that would guide their project. This will be a collaborative project where parts are done both at home and at school. For your student to be successful, they need to make sure that they are following the timeline for the project. This project makes up their whole science grade for this quarter. Yesterday, I sent home a calendar that outlines when each step would be assigned and when each step is due. I included the documents for Step 1 and Step 2 in the email I sent out about this blog post so that you can print anything that goes missing. :)

PFSA Bingo Night:

Our AMAZING PFSA is hosting a Bingo Night on Saturday, April 6th. They use the proceeds from these fun events to sponsor grants for classrooms, like the one they gave us to be able to do Wagons Ho! If you are able, please attend and have some fun while supporting our school!

ISAT Party:

ISATS are coming right up and we will be completing them the last week of April. I talked to my class yesterday about the ISAT party that we will be having after we complete our ISATs. Students can earn an invitation to the party one of two ways. The first way is the score, this means that they meet their goal on the ISAT by scoring a 3 or 4 or by improving one level from the practice ISAT they took in the fall. The second way they can earn an invitation is by working hard from now until ISATs showing that they are trying to do their very best. If you would like to help out and send in supplies, let me know and I will let you know what we need. :)

Week of March 18th

I hope you all are enjoying this warmer weather as much as I am! I love it when the weather starts to warm up and the windows start to open up. :) The warm weather is just in time for Spring Break next week!

ELA:

This week in ELA we will continue to read The One and Only Ivan. I am so proud of my students and how hard they have been working on getting their work done on time! This week we will have a spelling test on List X, but that is it for quizzes this week.

When your student returns from Spring Break, their March Reading Calendar will be due. Please make sure they are getting that filled out and ready to turn in.

Math:

We are continuing our work on converting fractions to decimals and understanding how they work together. Your student's homework will be reviewing the skills that we are learning in class and can be found on the white board in the virtual class. There is no Math 4 Today quiz this week.

Roaring Reader:

Roaring Reader logs are due to me by this Thursday the 21st. This allows me time to get everything compiled and ready to turn in to Roaring Springs. Please make sure that your student's reading log is turned in on time.

Science Fair:

This year the Science Fair will be on Thursday, May 16th. We will begin working on these projects when we come back from Spring Break. This is a project that will mostly be completed at home, however it will be broken into 4 steps so that I can teach each step of the scientific process as we go. Most steps have at least 1 week to complete with the exception of Step 1 that only has one day, so please be on the look out for that.

RAD:

Our students are working hard on their RAD music performance here at school. Our schedule will be a little different for the few weeks leading up to that. That show will be on Thursday, April 18th at 7:00pm in the AUX gym. Make sure you get it on your calendar now!

Week of March 11th

Hello! I hope you are all surviving Daylight's Savings. I am not a fan myself lol. I had lots of sleepy kiddos this morning, but we still had a great day! I still am having a hard time believing we are already in the 4th Quarter of the year. I am really enjoying my time with these kiddos and am not ready for them to move on yet!

ELA:

This week in ELA we are going to really be focusing on vocabulary and how we can learn vocabulary through the use of Greek and Latin morphemes. We will not have a ReadWorks assignment this week, but will be reading The One and Only Ivan. This is a quiz week so we will have a Morning Warm Up quiz in addition to our regular spelling test.

Math:

This week in math we are going to continue working on multiplying a fraction by a whole number. I am so pleased with how my students are doing with this skill so far! We will have a Math 4 Today quiz this Thursday. Homework this week will reflect the lessons we are doing in class.

Parent/Teacher Conferences:

This Thursday from 3:30-6:30 I will have drop-in style conferences. I would love to see you to discuss your student's progress as well as answer any questions or concerns you may have. I will also be available on Friday from 8:00-12:00. If you would like to schedule a time to meet on Friday, please just send me a quick email and we will get that scheduled! Quarter 3 grades will be posted tomorrow morning at 8.

Changes in Quarter 4:

In Quarter 4 we will be slightly changing our day. Instead of having a designated Must Do time of our day where students can work on missing work or homework, we will be using that time to get caught up on our writing. We have fallen behind and I want to make sure I cover all of the content before my students move on. That means that if your student doesn't finish their assignments in class, they will need to do them at home. I have let my students know that they can bring their novels, novel studies, or Idaho History Binders home as long as they come back the next day in the same condition. I want to make sure they (and you the parents) know that they are responsible for replacing anything that is lost or damaged once it leaves my room. As much as I would love to be able to provide books and supplies for all my students, I just don't have the budget to do so. :) Students will also have less time to get homework done in class. This is part of the Student Handbook however, so I am hoping it won't be too difficult of an adjustment. This will also help prepare my students for 5th grade and then middle school.

Commitment Letters:

Your student brought home a Commitment Letter today that they need to have filled out by you and then bring it back signed. This lets the school know how many positions to fill when they do the lottery. Please make sure you get that filled out and returned with your student by this Thursday.

Roaring Reader:

If your student is working towards getting their free ticket to Roaring Springs, they need to get that to me by Thursday the 21st. That will allow me time to get all of the student logs for our elementary school compiled so that I can get them submitted to Roaring Springs on time.

Week of March 4th

Thank you so much for working so hard with your students to get caught up on missing work! I came back from my trip to lots of things turned in, and I love that! I had an amazing time in Atlanta at my training and I am so excited to bring the things I learned back to the amazing staff and students here! Your students will probably be talking about a few of those today. :)

ELA:

This is a very typical week for ELA. We will have a spelling test on List U on Thursday, but no Morning Warm Up quiz this week though.

February Reading Calendars were due today. Please send me an email telling me how many minutes your student read if that is easier for you.

Math:

We started our Topic9 Test today. Students will have the opportunity to make corrections tomorrow. I am so excited to see how much they have learned about fractions so far!

2023-2024 PARENT SURVEY DUE MARCH 8th @ 4:

We deeply appreciate you taking the time to give your honest feedback on the 2023-2024 Parent Survey. We use the feedback to help us reflect and grow as a school community. This information is used and considered for setting strategic plan and continuous improvement goals in alignment with our accreditation process.  Your feedback really does matter. Please click here to take the parent survey.  This survey will close on Friday, March 8th at 4PM.

Parent/Teacher Conferences:

Next week we have Parent/Teacher Conferences next Thursday from 3:30-6:15 and Friday from 8:00-12:00. I am going to be treating the Thursday time as a drop-in time. I will be in the room and available to talk to you about your student if you would like to meet with me. I am going to be using Friday to schedule times if I have concerns that I would like to be able to discuss with you. If you don't receive an email from me this week to schedule a time to come in on Friday, feel free to come in whenever works best for you on Thursday. If those times don't work for you and you would like to meet, please send me an email and I will see if I can get you in during one of my prep times. :) I LOVE to meet with parents and have the opportunity to share how wonderfully your student is doing in class so I am hoping to have a great turn out!

Roaring Reader:

Roaring Reader logs are due on Thursday, March 21st. Your student is welcome to bring those in as soon as they are completed.

Week of February 26th

Welcome back! This week should be a much more normal week than last week as far as quizzes and daily activities. I will be gone on Wednesday and Thursday though. I am headed to Georgia for a training opportunity and I am so excited to bring back what I learn and share it with the rest of our amazing staff here at Vision! Mrs. Pratt will be my sub and since she is with us each day, she knows what to do so that allows my class to move forward as usual. If you have any transportation changes, please make sure you send those to the office on those days to make sure they are made. I don't anticipate that I will have much time to check my email while I am gone, so I appreciate your understanding if you email me and it takes a bit for me to respond to you. It will likely be next week.

ELA:

This week we will continue work on reading comprehension as we read through The One and Only Ivan. We will also continue our work on paired texts with ReadWorks. We WILL have a Morning Warm Up quiz as well as a Spelling Test on Thursday.

February Reading Calendars are due next Monday, March 4th. Next week is also the end of Quarter 3. That means that any missing assignments need to be turned in by next Thursday, March 7th.

Math:

We WILL have a Math 4 Today quiz this week. We are going to be wrapping up Topic 9 this week as well. We are going to take our test on it next week, but I will put them in the grade book for Quarter 4 so that if any students need to retake it, they will have time to do that. I don't want to put it off until after the end of the quarter because we are coming down to the wire. Please make sure your student has mastered skills from Topic 9 on IXL. This is an excellent way to study for our test.

Social Studies:

We jumped ahead to our Oregon Trail unit in our binders so that we were more prepared for Wagons Ho! We will finish up the activity we started there and then head back to our research project on the five main Native American Tribes after that.

Read Across America Week:

Read Across America Week is next week. I will include the flyer here so that you can plan ahead and I will print them and send them home as well.

Week of February 20th

I just want to thank each of the parents who came yesterday and helped make it such a success! Our group did such a great job that we got to experience something I have never seen before in all the years I have done Wagons Ho! We got to learn how to make a rope! It was gifted to me and I will be displaying it in our classroom for everyone to enjoy. The parents who helped out yesterday were Mrs. Bell, Mrs. Navarro, Mr. Daltow, Mrs. Quiroz, Mr. Hogan, Mr. Duffel, Mrs. Hodges, Mrs. Phillips, and Mrs. Grandma Phillips. My dad, Mr. Ryan, even came and helped out and taught the kids how to rope a calf! I went home exhausted and smelling like campfire smoke, but happy. It was a great day! I uploaded all of the pictures that I took to a Google Drive folder that you can access by clicking HERE. If you also took some pictures, please email them to me and I will add them to the folder.

ELA:

This week in ELA we will NOT have a Morning Warm-Up quiz, even though it is our week to do so. With Wagons Ho! yesterday I don't feel like it would be fair. So that will just be a daily work grade for the week. We DO have a spelling test on List T on Friday still.

February Reading Calendars will be due soon, just an FYI so you can make sure your student has those up to date.

Roaring Readers are due back by March 21st. As soon as your student has those minutes completed they are welcome to turn them in. Just a reminder that those minutes are supposed to be in addition to school work, so please make sure your student is turning in their reading calendars. :)

Math:

We are continuing our work on fractions in Topic 9 this week. Please check in with your student each evening and have them show you that they have completed their IXL math homework over the assigned skills. I have many that are not completing any each week and it is affecting their grade and their learning. We are coming up on the end of our time together in 4th grade and I keep encouraging my students to finish strong.

TEXAS ROADHOUSE DINE & DONATE Thurs, Feb 22nd 3-10PM:
Help Vision Charter School PFSA raise funds for our students by telling the waitress that you are from Vision Charter School when ordering and they will donate back 10% of the total purchase back to Vision Charter School. If they ask for a flyer, pull out your phone and show them the post on the school instagram page at vision_charter_school or facebook at https:///www.facebook.com/VisionCharter

Our PFSA completely funded our Wagons Ho! experience which we would not have been able to have without. Please take every opportunity you have to support their fundraisers. They do incredible things for our school!!

Monday, February 12, 2024

Week of February 12th

We have a busy next couple of weeks in 4th grade! Please make sure you are reading carefully through this blog so that you are up to date.

ELA:

This is a week with NO Morning Warm-Up quiz. Students will have a grade in the grade book based on completion and correcting their daily work accurately. We DO have a spelling test on List S on Thursday.

January Reading Calendars were due 2 weeks ago. If your student hasn't gotten that turned in, please help them remember to turn that in. An email from you letting me know the total number of minutes read for January works as well.

Math:

We took a quiz on Topic 8 last week. Over all my students did great on that quiz! We are moving into Topic 9 this week which deals with adding and subtracting fractions. Their homework will be on those skills as well. Please remind them to work on the assigned skills at home and not other, easier 4th-grade skills. There will NOT be a Math 4 Today quiz this week. They will get a daily work grade for completion as well as correctly correcting their daily work.

Social Studies:

Because we will be doing Wagons Ho! next week, we are going to jump ahead to our Oregon Trail unit before we continue working on our Native American research project. That way students will have a better foundational understanding of those events before we do Wagons Ho! which will hopefully make that day a little more meaningful.

Wagons Ho! will take place on Tuesday, February 20th and it is an all-day event. I do have the parent volunteers needed, but if you would like to be on my back up list, please email me and let me know.  Students will need to bring the following:

*a water bottle
*a bundle of wood
*a large 2 or 4 hole button
*be dressed appropriately for the weather including a hood or hat (Western Wear is optional)
*pictures of artifacts or family brands

NAEP Testing:

Students brought home letters about NAEP testing mid January. This is a federal mandate that we are required to comply with. It is a random selection of students from each class. Our class will be testing tomorrow starting at 8:15. Those students not selected for the NAEP testing will be working in class on updating diagnostic scores on IXL.

Valentines Day:

We will celebrate Valentine's Day on Wednesday, February 14th. This party is different than our other parties as it mostly consists of passing out valentines and then reading them. Students are welcome to create a box at home to collect their valentines from classmates. They do not have to though. I will have a basket for students to collect their Valentines in and then a grocery sack for students to take them home in, it isn't fancy but it will do the trick. :)

I posted our class list in the virtual classroom and you can click on that from the whiteboard or click HERE. Bringing valentines is optional! Your student is not required to bring any. However, if they do, please have them bring one for every student or one for every boy or every girl. That way no one has hurt feelings. :) This is a day that we focus on love and friendship. We don't worry about boyfriends and girlfriends in 4th grade so please remind your student of that as well. :)

We will also be watching Because of Winn Dixie on this day. It is a great story that celebrates friendship and family. We will compare and contrast it to the book as well. This movie is rated PG. If you do NOT want your student to watch the movie, please email me and let me know and I will provide an alternate activity for them to do during that time. If you would like to send in HEALTHY snacks like fruits, veggies, meat and cheese trays, etc. that would be great! Please no cookies or anything like that since they will have candy from their Valentines.

We did a quick writing activity for Valentine's Day last week where we talked about character attributes that are admirable rather than physical attributes. We have been discussing Dr. Martin Luther King a lot this month and we discussed his "I Have a Dream" speech and how he wanted his kids to be judged by the "content of their character". We brainstormed things that would make good character content and wrote all of those ideas on the board. Students then got a heart with a classmate's name on it that said "I love ___ a latte because ___." and they wrote something they loved about that classmate. It was a lot of fun and I was so impressed with some of the things they came up with. I also wrote one for each student and put those on our bulletin board as well. I will include a couple of pictures for you to see. Be proud of your kiddo, I know that I am!

Week of February 5th

We are well on our way to halfway through the 3rd quarter already if you can believe that! I find myself trying to put the breaks on and slow the year down a bit, I am not ready for it to be over. I have truly enjoyed getting to know each of my students this year. Trust me when I say with confidence, this class has an INCREDIBLE amount of potential and I cannot wait to see what they do!

We have been talking a lot about what it means to be a Golden Eagle Learner vs. a Baby Bird Learner and identifying different behaviors we may default to. It has brought on some fantastic discussions and I am so proud of them. Keep encouraging your student to be a Golden Eagle Learner who goes after their learning rather than just sitting and waiting for someone to bring them the answer (like a baby bird). We watched a funny video of a baby bird who had just left its nest. It was holding its little mouth open to a worm waiting for it to jump into its mouth. We talked about how just sitting and waiting for someone to give us the answer, do the right thing, or lead us to the answer, is similar to the baby bird and how ineffective it is.

ELA:

This week in ELA we are continuing to work on reading comprehension with The One and Only Ivan. We DO have a Morning Warm Up quiz on Thursday along with our spelling test on List R.

January Reading Calendars were due last week on the 1st. If your student forgot, please help them remember to turn it in or just send me a quick email letting me know how many minutes they read. Also, if they don't have the total minutes read written on their calendar when they turn it in, I will hand it back to them to total it up. If you thought your student had turned it in but it's still marked missing, that may be why. :)

Math:

We are going to be finishing up Topic 8 this week. We have been working to understand fractions, equivalent fractions, and how to compare fractions. We have done several Interactive Math Journal pages on this that your student is welcome to use when they are working on assignments at home or on their homework.

I have noticed a signification decrease in math homework since we have been back from Christmas break. Please ask your student to show you how many minutes they have completed for each skill each evening, even if they say they got it done in class. This does affect their grade as well as their learning when they aren't spending time practicing those skills.

Valentines Day:

We will celebrate Valentine's Day on Wednesday, February 14th. This party is different than our other parties as it mostly consists of passing out valentines and then reading them. Students are welcome to create a box at home to collect their valentines from classmates. They do not have to though. If you would like to send in HEALTHY snacks like fruits, veggies, meat and cheese trays, etc. that would be great! Please no cookies or anything like that since they will have candy from their Valentines.

Vision Screening:
Your student brought home a permission slip for a vision screening that will be offered by the Lions Club. It says "Vision and Hearing Screening", however, we are only doing the vision screening. If you would like your student to participate, please sign it and have them bring it back to me. If I don't have a signed permission slip from you, they will not get the screening. These will be happening on February 8th.

Week of January 29th

Hopefully, you saw both blog posts that I posted last week. If you didn't, please take a moment to scroll down and read through the extra one I posted last week. There are some important updates.

ELA:

This week in ELA we will continue reading The One and Only Ivan. We are working on comprehension, vocabulary, and summarizing. We are also talking about personification and how that affects the story and why the author may have chosen to use that. We will also be learning about adverbs and pronouns this week and adding new pages to our ELA Interactive Journal.

We do NOT have a Morning Warm Up quiz this week. We DO have a spelling test on List Q on Thursday.

Math:

This week we are continuing our work on Topic 8, which is all about fractions. We have been working to understand equivalent fractions. Your student's homework on IXL will be over these skills.

Valentines Day:

We will celebrate Valentine's Day on Wednesday, February 14th. This party is different than our other parties as it mostly consists of passing out valentines and then reading them.
